Lucille “Luci” Pieper Gwin was a nurse and a painter born in Brenham, Texas, United States. After graduating high school in Brenham, she moved to Galveston, Texas where she was accepted into the cadet-nursing core.

During World War II, Gwin did her training at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston. After obtaining her license as a registered nurse, she became the head nurse in the surgical unit at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston.

Gwin met Dr. Shannon Horace Gwin while he was a medical student at UTMB. Here are 10 more things about her:

  1. She was 1 year younger than Shannon. After the birth of their four children, she retired from nursing to raise them and she studied impressionist paintings.
  2. In 1932, she lost her parents. She was raised by her siblings.
  3. In 1950, she and Shannon got married. They lived in Galveston.
  4. In 1951, she gave birth to Shannon Collier Gwin.
  5. In 1952, she gave birth to Hannah Gwin.
  6. In 1954, she and her family moved from Galveston to Corpus Christi, Texas. In the same year, she gave birth to Marshall Allen Gwin in Corpus Christi, Texas.
  7. In 1956, she gave birth to David Kelly Gwin in Corpus Christi.
  8. On October 26, 2000, her son Marshall died after a long battle with liver disease. Marshall was 46.
  9. On February 23, 2007, her husband Shannon died at age 87.
  10. On September 16, 2015, she passed away at age 88.
