Officially called the Italian Republic, Italy is a country in Southern Europe. The country shares land borders with Austria, France, San Marino, Slovenia, Switzerland and Vatican City.

Italy became a republic on June 2, 1946 and its current constitution was adopted on January 1, 1948. The country was admitted to the United Nations on December 14, 1955.

Sergio Mattarella, 75, is the incumbent president of Italy. He assumed office on February 3, 2015.
