Kiko Matos has starred alongside several veteran actors since his first film “Babagwa” in 2013. Among those he felt highly honored to have worked with are Nora Aunor and Sharon Cuneta, who are dubbed the Superstar and the Megastar of the Philippines, respectively.
It was Matos’s first time to work with Aunor in the 2016 film “Kabisera,” which was one of the entries to the 42nd Metro Manila Film Festival. Among their co-stars were Ricky Davao, JC de Vera, Jason Abalos, Ronwaldo Martin, Victor Neri, Ces Quesada, Perla Bautista, Menggie Cobarrubias and Karl Medina.
In 2017, Matos had the chance to work with Cuneta for the first time. They will co-star in “Ang Pamilyang Hindi Lumuluha,” an entry to the 12th Cinemalaya Philipine Independent Film Festival.
“Ang Pamilyang Hindi Lumuluha” was written and directed by Mes de Guzman. Among Cuneta and Matos’s co-actors in the film are Niño Muhlach, Alonzo Muhlach, Moi Ocampo, Cris Villanueva, Richard Quan, Michelle Vito, Joe Gruta and Flor Salanga.
In a sit-down interview with Matos on July 6 at BAMF MMA Center, where he does his regular MMA training, I asked him to compare Aunor with Cuneta. He said the two actresses are definitely different because they have their unique qualities.
On the other hand, Aunor and Cuneta are the same when it comes to being motherly, according to Matos. People can easily approach both Aunor and Cuneta without the fear of being rejected or humiliated and this is probably why they became the Superstar and Megastar that they are now, Matos pointed out.
Matos himself is a celebrity that his fans can easily approach without the fear of being rejected or humiliated despite the persona that he shows as an MMA fighter. Time will tell if he can follow the footsteps of Aunor and Cuneta.
Including Aunor and Cuneta, there are four top veteran actresses in the history of Philippine cinema. Matos has yet to work with the other two, namely Maricel Soriano, the Diamond Star, and Vilma Santos, the Star for All Seasons.
Aside from “Ang Pamilyang Hindi Lumuluha,” Matos is also in the cast of another 2017 Cinemalaya film titled “Ang Guro Kong Hindi Marunong Magbasa.” Watch my interview with the actor-MMA fighter here:
