Before becoming a full-time MMA fighter, Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio was a Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH) teacher. The Baguio resident shared his thoughts on current MMA issues in an interview at the Team Lakay gym in La Trinidad, Benguet, on Aug. 25, which was a day before the boxing superfight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
During the interview, I asked Eustaquio who he was rooting for between the Irish MMA fighter and the undefeated American boxer. Apparently, the Team Lakay fighter is one of those who are not a big fan of the superfight because for him, pitting McGregor against Mayweather is like a cockfight between a rooster and a duck.
Nevertheless, Eustaquio had predicted that Mayweather would defeat McGregor. On Aug. 26, the reigning UFC lightweight champion managed to last for 10 rounds but before the 11th round, the referee stopped the fight and declared Mayweather as the winner.
I also asked Eustaquio on his thoughts about the controversial fight cards of the Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC). In 2016, the URCC included first-time MMA fighters and actors Baron Geisler and Kiko Matos in its fight card and just recently, the latter made a comeback and defeated first-time MMA fighter Billy Jack Sanchez.
In MMA, sports and entertainment go hand in hand, Eustaquio acknowledged. However, the URCC seemed to be showing pure entertainment and disregarding sports recently, the Team Lakay fighter commented.
Meanwhile, Eustaquio is set to headline “ONE: Total Victory” opposite former ONE flyweight world champion Kairat Akhtemov. The two will battle it out at the Jakarta Convention Center in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Sept. 16, Saturday.
Eustaquio was accompanied by Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao and ONE lightweight world champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang in Jakarta for the “ONE: Total Victory” fight. Watch my interview with Eustaquio here:
