Two great things happened to Manchester City on Nov. 5 at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England. Aside from securing its ninth consecutive Premier League win by defeating Arsenal, the football club signed a brand partnership with Gatorade.
According to the multi-year partnership, Gatorade will become the official sports nutrition partner of City. The sports scientists of the football club will work closely with the Gatorade Sport Science Institute (GSSI) as part of the deal.
“Gatorade is a globally recognized brand with a fantastic relationship with competitive athletes in the United States and all around the world,” The Drum quoted City’s senior vice president of partnerships Damian Willoughby as saying. “After a successful Manchester City US pre-season tour in Summer 2017, coupled with our growing presence and fan base in the US and globally, Gatorade are the perfect partner for us.”
Gatorade head of global marketing Anuj Bhasin also expressed the excitement of the brand to partner with City. He said, “We look forward to a strong partnership with Manchester City by providing the team’s sports health and performance professionals with a variety of sports fueling solutions to help maximize performance through customized sports science services.”
With Vincent Kompany as the captain of City’s first team squad and David Silva as the vice-captain, the first team squad includes Claudio Bravo, Kyle Walker, Danilo, John Stones, Raheem Sterling, Ilkay Gundogan, Sergio Aguero, Ellaquim Mangala, Kevin De Bruyne, Fabian Delph, Leroy Sane, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy, Tosin Adarabioyo, Fernandinho, Nicolas Otamendi, Ederson, Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Yaya Toure, Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz. Pep Guardiola is the manager.
Fifteen days after the announcement of the partnership between Manchester City and Gatorade, the sports-themed beverage and food products manufacturer released a commercial starring tennis superstar Serena Williams.
The Gatorade commercial appeared to show Williams cradling Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., her three-month-old daughter with Alexis Olympia Ohanian Sr. However, it was later revealed that the baby was a body double.
“While Serena intended to have Olympia make her screen debut as part of this film, her daughter was under the weather and unable to be on set,” a Gatorade spokeswoman said in a statement obtained by Ad Age. “But the sentiment remains the same.”
Like Williams, Usain Bolt, Dwyane Wade, Eli Manning and James Rodriguez are also Gatorade celebrity endorsers. Watch the Gatorade commercial featuring Williams here:
