Developed and published by Nintendo, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” was declared the Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2017. Hosted by “GameTrailers TV” host Geoff Keighley, the video game award ceremony took place on Dec. 7, Thursday, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.
As the Game of the Year, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” bested four other nominees. Also nominated for the award were “Super Mario Odyssey,” also by Nintendo,” “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” by PUBG Corp., “Persona 5” by Atlus and “Horizon Zero Dawn” by Guerrilla Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment.
“PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds” was also nominated for the Best Ongoing Game but it lost to “Overwatch” by Blizzard. The other nominees in the category were ‘Warframe” by Digital Extremes, “Rainbow Six: Siege” by Ubisoft Montreal, “Grand Theft Auto Online” by Rockstar Games and “Destiny 2” by Bungie and Activision.
Aside from the Game of the Year, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” was also named the Best Action/Adventure Game. The jurors chose it over “Super Mario Odyssey,” “Uncharted: The Lost Legacy” by Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive Entertainment, “Assassin’s Creed: Origins” by Ubisoft Montreal and “Horizon Zero Dawn.”
Moreover, “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” director Hidemaro Fujibayashi won the Best Game Direction award. He beat the directors of “Super Mario Odyssey,” “Horizon Zero Dawn,” “Wolfenstein II” by MachineGames and Bethesda and “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” by Capcom.
It was in the Best Family Game category that “Super Mario Odyssey” defeated its fellow nominees. The other games nominated in this category were “Splatoon 2” and “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” by Nintendo, “Sonic Mania” by PagodaWest Games + Headcannon and Sege, and “Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle” by Ubisoft Paris + Milan.
