If stars align perfectly for ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee in 2018, she will defeat Mei Yamaguchi and become ONE Championship’s third two-division world champion by dethroning ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan. If Lee wants to challenge reigning UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Rose Namajunas, ONE Championship would be willing to sanction such a cross-promotional fight.
“We would love nothing better than to have an open invitation to UFC and their world champion to compete against ONE Championship and our world champions any place, anywhere in the world,” ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong declared during a worldwide media conference call on March 15, 2018. He added that the first person the promotion would put up would be Lee.
Currently, Lee has a perfect record of 8 wins and 0 loss. All of her wins are under ONE Championship.
On the other hand, Namajunas has 7 wins and 3 losses. Under the UFC, she has 5 wins and 2 losses.
According to Sityodtong, it would make sense for ONE Championship to have a cross-promotional bout with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) than with Bellator MMA. He explained, “I’m less interested in Bellator because for me, UFC versus ONE makes a lot of sense since we both dominate each other’s hemispheres, respective hemispheres rather.”
“It’s no secret that UFC is the king of mixed martial arts in the Western Hemisphere and it’s no secret that ONE Championship is the king of martial arts in the Eastern Hemisphere so it kind of makes sense getting the best of the west versus the best of the east for a truly global (cross-promotional bout),” Sityodtong said. “I think it would be amazing for all martial arts fans around the world. People definitely want to see the best of the best compete so, the thing that makes most sense for me is ONE versus UFC.”
Having been around martial arts for more than 30 years, Sityodtong has seen many athletes in all forms of martial arts. For him, Lee is “a very, very special athlete, one in seven billion.”
“I do believe she has what it takes to be a two-division and even three-division female world champion,” Sityodtong added. “But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We have Mei Yamaguchi in front of Angela.”
On May 18, 2018, Lee will defend her title for the third time in a rematch with Yamaguchi at “ONE: Unstoppable Dreams” in Singapore. Here is a clip featuring Lee and her fellow champions of ONE Championship:
