Two celebrities made news this week after committing suicide. Fashion designer Kate Spade was found dead in her condominium in Park Avenue, Manhattan, New York City on June 5, 2018 and celebrity chef and martial artist Anthony Bourdain was found unresponsive in his hotel in Strasbourg, France on June 8, 2018.
Both Spade and Bourdain committed suicide by hanging. It was a cleaner who found Spade’s body in her home and her only child Frances Beatrix, 13, was not home at the time.
“Well, I don’t know what happened,” Spade’s father Frank Brosnahan told Kansas City Star. “The last I talked with her, the night before last, she was happy planning a trip to California to look at colleges. She doted on her daughter.”
Spade was 55 at the time of her death. Bourdain was 61.
Bourdain was working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” when he was in France. It was French chef Eric Ripert, his close friend, who found his body in his hotel room.
“It is with extraordinary sadness we can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain,” CNN said in a statement. “His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink and the remarkable stories of the world made him a unique storyteller.”
“His talents never ceased to amaze us and we will miss him very much,” the network added. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family at this incredibly difficult time.”
As a martial artist, Bourdain received a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2015. In 2016, he won gold at the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) Open Championship in the Middleweight Master 5 division.
From 1985 to 2005, Bourdain was married to Nancy Putkoski. In 2007, Bourdain married Ottavia Busia and they had one child, Ariane Bourdain, 11.
On the other hand, Spade was married to Andy Spade, the brother of comedian David Spade. The late fashion designer known for her quality stylish handbags is also the aunt of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan.
