Former UFC Lightweight Champion Conor “The Notorious” McGregor, 30,of Ireland was one of the celebrities who watch the 2018 FIFA World Cup final. The Irish mixed martial artist was a special guest of Vladimir Putin, 55, the incumbent president of Russia.
McGregor celebrated his 30th birthday on July 14, 2018. The 2018 FIFA World Cup final took place at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia on July 15, 2018.
Winning the match 4-2 against Croatia, France claimed their second World Cup title. Football is the most popular sport in Croatia and had its national football team won at the 2018 FIFA World Cup final, it would have been its first World Cup title.
Aside from Putin, McGregor met his friend and fellow UFC fighter Artem “The Russian Hammer” Lobov, 31, during the FIFA World Cup final. The two MMA fighters are both fighting out of Dublin, Ireland and are training at Straight Blast Gym.
Lobov was originally scheduled to fight Alex Caceres at “UFC 223” on April 7, 2018 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. However, the bout was cancelled due to the involvement of Lobov in a riot led by McGregor.
On April 3, 2018, Lobov and Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov, 29, of Dagestan, Russia were involved in an altercation at a hotel in Brooklyn. On April 5, 2018, McGregor, Lobov and their teammates attacked a bus containing several fighters including Nurmagomedov, who was scheduled to compete for the UFC Lightweight Championship at “UFC 223.”
Because of the attack, McGregor faced felony charges in New York. He was also stripped of the UFC Lightweight Championship belt due to inactivity.
After beating Al Iaquinta at “UFC 223,” Nurmagomedov became the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion. A bout between Nurmagomedov and McGregor is rumored to take place in Russia before 2019.
