Florida’s Dustin Poirier earns 16th UFC win

Fighting out of Coconut Creek, Florida, United States, Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier, 29, has earned his 16th victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He recently defeated Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez, 34, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA in a rematch.

Poirier and Alvarez’s first encounter took place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, USA at “UFC 211” on May 13, 2017. Their lightweight bout ended in a No Contest due to accidental knee to the head of a grounded fighter.

On July 28, 2018, Poirier and Alvarez had their rematch in the main event of “UFC on Fox 30,” which took place at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Referee Marc Goddard put a stop to the lightweight bout at 4:05 of Round 2 when the fighter from Florida knocked out his opponent from Pennsylvania via punches.

“UFC on Fox 30” marked Poirier’s 21st outing in the UFC. He currently has 16 wins, 4 losses and 1 No Contest in the promotion.

By defeating Alvarez at “UFC on Fox 30,” Poirier improved his overall professional mixed martial arts record to 24 wins, 5 losses and 1 No Contest. He is now riding a four-bout winning streak having defeated Jim “A10” Miller, 34, of Sparta, New Jersey, USA, Anthony “Showtime” Pettis, 31, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA and Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje, 29, of Safford, Arizona, USA before facing Alvarez.

The four UFC fighters who defeated Poirier are “The Korean Zombie” Chang Sung Jung, 31, of Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang, South Korea, Kevin Luke “Cub” Swanson, 34, of Palm Springs, California, USA, Conor “The Notorious” McGregor, 30, of Dublin, Ireland and Michael “The Menace” Johnson, 32, of Springfield, Missouri, USA. Poirier was submitted by Chang via brabo choke at “UFC on Fuel TV 3” on May 15, 2012 at the Patriot Center, Fairfax, Virginia, USA.

Swanson defeated Poirier via unanimous decision at “UFC on Fuel TV 7” on February 16, 2013 at the Wembley Arena in London, England. Both via punches, the Florida resident was knocked out by McGregor at “UFC 178” on September 27, 2014 at rhe MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA and by Johnson at “UFC Fight Night 94” on September 17, 2016 at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.

Losing to Poirier at “UFC on Fox 30” downgraded Alvarez’s professional MMA record to 29 wins, 6 losses and 1 No Contest. Here is Poirier right after his 16th UFC win:
