Training out of Selapak, mixed martial artist Chan Rothana, 32, of Phnom Penh, Cambodia has earned his fourth ONE Championship. He was one of the winners at “ONE: Destiny of Champions” on December 7, 2018 at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
“ONE: Destiny of Champions” featured nine mixed martial arts matches and four Muay Thai contests. In the second bout of the evening, Rothana and Abro Fernandes, 28, of Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia competed in an MMA bout in the flyweight division.
Kemp Cheng served as the referee of the flyweight bout between Rothana and Fernandes. The Cambodian striker rallied back from a tough opening frame to notch a technical knockout win over his Indonesian opponent.
After surviving a series of takedowns and a submission attempt from Fernandes, Rothana turned the tide in the second round with his superior striking. With 54 seconds remaining in the period, the Cambodian contender earned the finish with a flurry of strikes, capped off by a well-placed knee that put his Indonesian opponent down for good.
This is the first professional MMA loss of Fernandes, who is training out of Han Academy and Indo Gym. Losing to Rothana downgraded the Indonesian fighter’s professional record to 7 wins and 1 loss.
On the other hand, Rothana now has 5 wins and 3 losses. It is the Cambodian fighter’s fourth win in ONE Championship.
Rothana and Sovannahry Em, 26, were the only Cambodian fighters on the “ONE: Destiny of Champions” card. Originally, he and Rothana were scheduled to face each other at “ONE: Heart of a Lion” at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore on November 9, 2018 but the bout was canceled.
When Rothana made his ONE Championship debut at “ONE: Rise of the Kingdom” on September 12, 2014, he knocked out his countryman Prak Chansin, 29. In the same event, the Cambodian fighter lost to another Cambodian fighter Samang Dun via disqualification due to illegal stomp.
On March 13, 2015, Rothana returned with a redemptive win at “ONE: Age of Champions” where he knocked out Ramon “Bicolano” Gonzales of the Philippines. On December 5, 2015, the Cambodian fighter earned his third ONE Champion win with yet another technical knockout victory during his rematch with Dun at “ONE: Kingdom of Khmer.”
