Filipinos are thrilled by the idea that the four Miss Universe winners from the Philippines each wore the four colors of the Philippine flag namely yellow, white, blue and red during their crowning moment. However, one turns out to be inaccurate.
Wearing a red dress, Catriona Gray was 24 when she was crowned Miss Universe 2018 at the IMPACT Arena, Exhibition and Convention Center in Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok, Thailand on December 17, 2018. The Filipino-Australian model and singer from Oas, Albay bested 93 candidate and was crowned by Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa.
Wearing a blue dress, Filipino-German model and actress Pia Wurtzbach was 26 when she was crowned Miss Universe 2015 at The AXIS in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on December 20, 2015. She bested 79 other candidates and was crowned by Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega of Colombia.
Wearing a white dress, Davao native Margarita Moran was 19 when she was crowned Miss Universe 1973 on July 21, 1973 at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, Greece. She bested 60 other candidates and was crowned by Miss Universe 1972 Kerry Anne Wells of Australia.
Wearing a silverish white dress, La Union native Gloria Diaz was 18 when she was crowned Miss Universe 1969 at the Miami Beach Auditorium in Miami Beach, Florida, United States on July 19, 1969. She bested 60 other candidates and was crowned by Miss Universe 1968 Martha Vasconcellos of Brazil.
The photos of Diaz wearing a yellow dress with her crown on her head was taken after her coronation as Miss Universe 1969. This means the next Miss Philippines in the beauty pageant should wear a yellow dress should she make it to the final round to complete the Philippine flag colors.
Aside from its equal bands of blue and red, the Philippine flag has a yellow sun with eight primary rays in the center of a white equilateral triangle. A yellow star is situated at each of the vertex of the triangle, representing the Philippines’ three main groups of islands namely Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
During the preliminary competition of Miss Universe 2018, Gray wore a national costume that paid tribute to Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Here is her post-coronation interview with Dyan Castillejo:
