Representing Spain, Angela Ponce did not make it to the quarterfinals of Miss Universe 2018. But by making history as the first ever transwoman to join the beauty pageant in the international level, she is truly a winner in her own right.
After the announcement of the candidates who made it to the Top 20, Ponce was given a special moment during the Miss Universe 2018 coronation night. She was honored by the predominantly Thai crowd while she was walking the stage with her Miss Spain sash on her right hand.
It was symbolic for Ponce to be given such an honor and welcome in Thailand, which is one of the most LGBTQ-friendly countries in the world. As the second transwoman to join Miss Universe in the national level, she furthered what Jenna Talackova started in 2012.
Talackova became the first ever transwoman to join Miss Universe in the national level by joining Miss Universe Canada 2012. She finished in the Top 12.
Ponce was born male on January 18, 1991 in Pilas, Seville, Spain to restaurateurs Eustaquio Ponce Moreno and Maria Jose Camacho Notario. Angela has a sister named Amanda Ponce Camacho, 19, a law student, and an elder brother who manages their family-owned bar in Pilas.
On June 29, 2018, Ponce represented Seville in Miss Universe Spain 2018 at the August Auditorium of Palau Firal i de Congressos de Tarragona in Tarragona, Spain. She won the title besting 19 candidates.
A trans rights activist, Ponce is a volunteer of Fundacion Daniela, which is working to end the discrimination suffered by transsexual children and adolescents. It is a nonprofit organization established by a Spanish woman who lost her daughter whose school refused to recognize her as a transgender girl.
At the age of 18, Ponce started a career in modelling. She was represented by several modelling agencies including Stars Model Agency, Apple Model, Maroe Management and Salvador Models and Actors and has graced the covers of Sevilla and Vogue Spain.
