Jon “Bones” Jones, 31, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States and Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson, 31, of Stockholm, Sweden are facing each other yet again more than five years after their first encounter in the Ultimate Fighting Championship octagon. Their rematch is the main event of “UFC 232.”
Taking place at The Forum in Inglewood, California, USA, “UFC 232” will feature 13 mixed martial arts bouts. In the final bout of the evening, Jones and Gustafsson will battle it out in the light heavyweight division.
The first time Jones and Gustafsson fought each other was on September 21, 2013. They headlined “UFC 165” at the Air Canada Cetre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
After five five-minute rounds, referee John McCarthy raised the hand of Jones, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision. It was the Albuquerque native’s sixth successful UFC Light Heavyweight Championship defense.
Jones reigned as the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion from March 19, 2011 to April 28, 2015. On January 3, 2015, he defeated his challenger Daniel “DC” Cormier, 39, of San Jose, California, USA via unanimous decision at “UFC 182” but almost four months later, the former was stripped of the title due to his involvement and arrest in a felony hit-and-run.
Cormier became the new champion on May 23, 2015 when he defeated Anthony Johnson at “UFC 187.” On April 23, 2016, Jones won the interim title by defeating Ovince “OSP” Saint Preux, 35, of Knowxville, Tennessee, USA via unanimous decision at “UFC 197.”
On November 9, 2016, Jones was stripped of the interim title due to his 1-year suspension related to a failed pre-fight drug test. On July 29, 2017, Jones challenged Cormier at “UFC 214.”
Jones dethroned Cormier in their rematch via knockout via head kick and punches. But on September 13, 2017, the result was overturned to a No Contest due to the failed pre-fight drug test of the former and the title was given back to the latter.
On December 28, 2018, Cormier vacated the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. He is still reigning as the UFC Heavyweight Champion.
Gustafsson and Jones will compete for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Championship title at “UFC 232.” It is likely that the rematch will go the distance just like their first encounter.
The main event of “UFC 232” may end in unanimous decision in favor of Jones. Even if it ends in split decision, it is going to be in his favor more possibly.
Currently, Jones holds a professional MMA record of 22 wins, 1 loss and 1 No Contest while Gustafsson has 18 wins and 4 losses. Here is a vlog featuring the two contenders prior to their UFC Light Heavyweight Championship bout:
