Amanda “The Lioness” Nunes, 30, of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil and Jon “Bones” Jones, 31, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States were two of the winners at “UFC 232” on December 29, 2018 at The Forum in Inglewood, California, United States. Jones was very happy for Nunes’s victory but he felt sad for her opponent Cristiane “Cris Cyborg” Justino, 33, of Curitiba, Parana, Brazil.
“I’m extremely proud, I’m happy for Amanda Nunes mainly for Brazil to have now the most dominant woman champion of all time being from Brazil,” Jones said during the “UFC 232” post-fight press conference. “I’m extremely proud for Brazil. I’ve always had this strong connection to Brazil. I really adore that country so I’m really happy for Amanda Nunes.”
“At the same time, as a Christian, I’m really sad for Cris Cyborg as a woman of God,” Jones continued. “I gotta admit I wanted her to win. There’s no knock on Amanda. Those guys are great champions and it was a great fight to watch.”
While still reigning as the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion, Nunes challenged Justino, who was the reigning UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion in the co-main event of “UFC 232.” Referee Marc Goddard put a stop to the featherweight championship bout between the two Brazilian champions after 51 seconds in the first round when the challenger knocked out the defending champion via punch.
In the main event, Jones had his rematch with Alexander “The Mauler” Gustafsson of Stockholm, Stockholm County, Sweden. Referee Mike Beltran put a stop to the contest after 2 minutes and 2 seconds in the third round when the American contender knocked out his Swedish opponent via punches.
Jones was rooting for Justino. After all the bouts, he approached her and talked to her.
“I told her that I’m honored to stand by her because of her clarity in such a hectic situation,” Jones said. “She said, her quote was, ‘I don’t know why God did this but I know He has a plan for all of our lives.’ Whether you believe it or not, I do believe He has a plan for all of our lives and the fact that she wasn’t discouraged or dismayed by this, it showed me that strength and what it is.”
“She understands that it was in God’s plan for her to lose tonight and she was a woman enough to stand with pride in who she is and not feel like a failure,” Jones said of Justino. “She will know why this happened eventually and she will come back stronger than ever.”
My advice is for her to keep her head high and know that God has a plan for her.”
