France is a country in Western Europe. Officially called the French Republic, the country borders Andorra, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Monaco, Spain and Switzerland in Europe and Brazil, the Netherlands and Suriname in the Americas.

On October 24, 1945, France joined the United Nations as a founding member. The country has overseas territories including French Guiana in South America, Saint Pierre and Miquelon in the North Atlantic, the French West Indies and several islands in Oceania and the Indian Ocean.
