The Independent State of Papua New Guinea is a country in Oceania and the third largest country in the world. There are 851 known languages in the country, which comprises the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and its offshore island in Melanesia.

In 1884, Papua New Guinea’s northern half started being ruled by Germany as a colony called German New Guinea while its southern part became a British protectorate and in 1888, Britain annexed the southern part together with some adjacent islands as British New Guinea, which was renamed the Territory of Papua in 1905. After World War II and the victory of the Allies, the two territories were combined into the Territory of Papua and New Guinea, which was later renamed Papua New Guinea.

Papua New Guinea established independence from Australia and became a Commonwealth realm with Elizabeth II, 92, as its queen on September 16, 1975 and was admitted to the United Nations on October 10, 1975. The country’s incumbent governor-general Bob Dadae, 57, assumed office on February 28, 2017.
