Scotland is a country in Northern Europe. The country is divided into 32 administrative subdivisions or local authorities called council areas.

England, Scotland and Wales are collectively called Great Britain. The three countries and Northern Ireland are the constituent countries of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, also known as the U.K. or Britain, which was admitted to the United Nations on October 24, 1945.

In the U.K. parliament, Scotland is represented by 59 members. Nicola Sturgeon, 48, assumed office as the first minister of Scotland on November 20, 2014 and she was reelected on May 5, 2016.
