South Africa is home to Miss World 1958 Penelope Coelen, Miss World 1974 Anneline Kriel, Miss Universe 1978 Margaret Gardiner, Miss World 2014 Rolene Strauss and Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters. The country is bounded by Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe to the north and by Eswatini and Mozambique to the northeast and east.
Dubbed as the rainbow nation, South Africa became a republic on May 31, 1961. Frederik Willem de Klerk and Nelson Mandela led efforts to negotiate an end to apartheid in the country.
From 1994 to 1999, Mandela served as the president of South Africa, making him the first black African to hold the position. The country’s fifth and incumbent president Cyril Ramaphosa, 66, assumed office on February 15, 2018.
Inhabited by a multiethnic society, South Africa has 11 official languages namely Afrikaans, English, Northern Sotho, Swazi, Southern Ndebele, Southern Sotho, Tsonga, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu.
