Holding a professional mixed martial arts record of 7 wins and 5 losses, Robin “The Ilonggo” Catalan, 30, is one of the top strawweight fighters of ONE Championship. Training out of Catalan Fighting Systems in Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines, the Filipino MMA fighter shared the areas he wants to work on.
“I still want to improve my grappling and wrestling,” Catalan said. “That is one of our main goals this 2019. Those are areas that we, as a team, feel that we lack and needs major improvement, so we will focus more on that for this year.”
Catalan won two of his three ONE Championship bouts in 2018. On March 24, 2018, he defeated Kritsada “Dream Man” Kongsrichai, 25, of Thailand at “ONE: Iron Will” at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand when the latter was disqualified due to illegal slam.
On July 7, 2018, Catalan submitted Adrian “Papua Badboy” Matheis, 25, of Jakarta, Indonesia via heel hook at “ONE: Battle for the Heavens” at the Tianhe Gymnasium in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. But on October 6, 2018, the Filipino fighter was submitted by Hayato Suzuki, 32, of Saitama, Japan via rear-naked choke at “ONE: Kingdom of Heroes” at the Impact Arena.
On January 19, 2019, the Iloilo native will return to Jakarta to face yet another Indonesian opponent. He will face Stefer “The Lion” Rahardian, 32, of Jakarta at “ONE: Eternal Glory,” which will take place at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta.
Rahardian currently has 8 wins and 2 losses. In 2018, he lost two of his four ONE Championship bouts.
On July 27, 2018, Rahardian lost to Catalan’s brother Rene “The Challenger” Catalan, 40, via unanimous decision at “ONE: Reign of Kings” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines.
