Manny Pacquiao is still WBA World Welterweight Champion, beats Adrien Broner in Las Vegas

Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao, 40, of General Santos City, Philippines is still the World Boxing Association (Regular) Welterweight Champion. He successfully defended his belt on January 19, 2019 at “Return to Vegas” against Adrian “The Problem” Broner, 29, of Ohio, United States.

“Return to Vegas” took place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. In the main event, Broner challenged Pacquiao.

Russell Mora served as the referee of the bout between Pacquiao and Broner. Dave Moretti, Glenn Feldman and Tim Cheatham were the judges.

After 12 rounds, the bout was left in the hands of the judges. Moretti scored it 117-111 while both Feldman and Cheatham scored it 116-112 all in favor of Pacquiao.

In the end, Mora raised the hand of Pacquiao, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision. It marked the 18th time the Filipino boxing legend won a professional boxing bout via unanimous decision.

On July 15, 2018, Pacquiao captured the WBA (Regular) Welterweight Championship title by dethrone then champion Lucas “La Maquina” Matthysse, 36, of Chubut, Argentina. The two battled it out at “Fight of Champions” at  the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Winning at “Return to Vegas” improved Pacquiao’s professional boxing record to 61 wins, 7 losses and 2 draws. It marked his 70th bout as a professional boxer.

On the other hand, Broner now has 33 wins, 4 losses, 1 draw and 1 No Contest. The first three boxers who defeated him were Marcos “El Chino” Maidana, 35, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Shawn “Showtime” Porter, 31, of Nevada and Mikey Garcia, 31, of California, USA.

There were two Filipino boxers who competed on the undercard at “Return to Vegas.” Jayar “Hitman” Inson, 28, of Davao del Sur and Rey “Sindangan Technician” Perez, 28, of Zamboanga del Norte competed in the welterweight and lightweight divisions, respectively.

In the fourth bout of the evening, Inson lost to Jonathan Steele of the USA via split decision in the welterweight division.
