“Sayote Man” is one of the official entries to the fourth edition of Singkuwento International Film Festival. All of the short film’s cast and crew members are of Igorot descent.
Filmed in La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines, “Sayote Man” uses three languages namely Kankanaey, Filipino and English. It stars Austin Docyogen in the titular role.
Docyogen’s “Sayote Man” co-stars are Anna Fe Lugares-Berto, Enrique Olpindo Jr. and Kakin Cayad-an. Also in the cast are Danilo Bulanay, Genevieve Ti, Marsha Depnag and Conan Altatis.
Written and directed by Altatis, “Sayote Man” is about Igorot man Kenneth Umengan (Docyogen) who works as a vendor at La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post in La Trinidad and has been singlehandedly raising his three younger siblings since their parents died in a vehicular accident five years ago. Lugares-Berto, Olpindo and Cayad-an play the siblings while Soliman Cruz makes a special appearance as their father.
The assistant directors were Alvin Berto and Julius Lumiqued. Berto was also the cinematographer while Lumiqued was also the production designer.
Singkuwento International Film Festival 2019 runs from February 15-22, 2019 at the Leandro Locsin Theater of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Building at 633 General Luna Street in Intramuros, Manila, Philippines. Written and directed by Arlyn de la Cruz, “Immaculada” starring Ara Mina, John Estrada and Elizabeth Oropesa made its world premiere as the opening film of the film festival.
De la Cruz is in the cast of “Desfocado,” which was written by Altatis and directed by his mentor Brillante Mendoza. It is one of the three parts of the omnibus film “Lakbayan” (Journey), the first ever collaboration of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival Best Director with Lav Diaz and Kidlat Tahimik.
On February 17, 2019, “Sayote Man” made its world premiere at the Singkuwento International Film Festival 2019. The gala screening is scheduled on February 19, 2019 at 7:45 p.m. at the NCCA Building.
