Reigning Brave Combat Federation Bantamweight Champion Stephen “The Sniper” Loman, 23, is training out of Team Lakay in Baguio City, Philippines. In an exclusive interview at the TV5 Media Center in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, Philippines on February 18, 2018, I asked the Filipino mixed martial artist about the story behind his fight name.

According to Loman, it was Team Lakay founder and head coach Mark Sangiao who gave him his fight name. The Brave CF champ said his coach based the moniker on how he beats his opponents.

“He saw something in me that I can do (or) finish my opponents like sniping them,” Loman said of Sangiao then laughed. “He saw my skills (and realized) that I can finish my opponents via knockouts or something so that’s why (he named me The Sniper).”

In a separate interview, I asked Sangiao what makes Loman different from his other students. The Team Lakay head coach said the reigning Brave CF Bantamweight Champion is quiet, which is contrary to how explosive he is in the cage, which was why he named him The Sniper.

“He is very silent, a silent-type guy,” Sangiao said of Loman. “You cannot see, you cannot see his performance, you cannot see in his face his being a champion. Maybe, that’s one thing that I can see in him. He’s very silent. That’s why we call him The Sniper.”

On March 15, 2019, Loman will once again display his explosiveness as he defends his belt for the third time. He will be challenged by former Brave CF Featherweight Champion Elias “Smile” Boudegzdame, 25, of France in the main event of “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila.

“For this next fight, fighting here in the hometown, there is, of course, extra pressure because all of my kababayans (countrymen) (will be watching live) and (with all) the support of all the members of my family and relatives, there is an extra pressure for me to fight,” Loman told me. “But all I have to do is focus still in the fight because that’s the important (thing) when I am fighting. I’m focused still even though there’s extra pressure.”

Featuring nine MMA matches, “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” is the first ever Brave CF event to be held in the Philippines. Including Loman, the fight card has 11 Filipino fighters, five of whom are training out of Team Lakay.
