Representing UGB MMA, Mark “The Ruthless” Alcoba, 27, has a tough task to do at “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors,” Bahrain-based mixed martial artist promotion Brave Combat Federation’s first Philippine event. He will battle it out with fellow Filipino fighter Jeremy “The Juggernaut” Pacatiw, 22.
Pacatiw is training out of Team Lakay, one of the top MMA teams in Asia. “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” marks his eighth Brave CF bout making him the athlete with the most fights in the promotion.
On February 18, 2018, Brave CF signed a deal with Philippine television network TV5 during a press conference at the TV5 Media Center in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila. Pacatiw and Alcoba were among the eight fighters on the “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” who joined the panel.
“Para sa akin po, ibibigay ko lahat ng kaya pero pareho naman kaming Pinoy e,” (For me, I will give all that I can but we are both Filipinos anyway), Alcoba told the media. “Maganda yong laban na ibibigay namin. Gawin ko lang lahat ng ginagawa kong training. Basta ibigay ko lang lahat, lahat ng makakaya ko.” (This is a good match. I will simply continue the training that I am currently doing. I will just give all that I can.)
In an exclusive interview, I asked Alcoba if he would rather have a non-Filipino opponent at “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors.” He replied, “Oo, sana kaso ang binigay na kalaban, si Jeremy pero ibibigay ko lahat ng makakaya ko para sa laban na ‘to.” (Yes, but they gave Jeremy as my opponent but still, I will give everything that I can for this fight.)
“Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” marks Alcoba’s Brave debut. Part of his preparation is studying Pacatiw’s previous fights.
“Ang ganda ng wrestling niya, ang wrestling defense niya, pinag-aralan ko, pinaghandaan ko kasi striker talaga ako,” (His wrestling is really good, his wrestling defense, I studied it, I prepared for it because I am really a striker), Alcoba said of Pacatiw. “Pinaghandaan ko ang takedown defense ng Jiu-Jitsu.” (I prepared for the takedown defense of Jiu-Jitsu.”
I then asked Alcoba about his predictions for the fight. He said, “Sa akin lang, gusto kong matapos ng maaga.” (For me, I want it to end early.)
“Why? Are you in a hurry?” I jokingly asked. Alcoba jokingly replied, “Nagmamadali akong umuwi.” (I’m in a hurry to go home.)
On serious note, Alcoba said he is not expecting the fight against Pacatiw to end either in a knockout or submission. The UGB MMA fighter explained, “Expected ‘yong three rounds kasi hindi basta-basta yong kalaban kasi (top) contender siya ngayon.” (I expect three rounds because the opponent is not easy considering that he is currently the (top) contender).
