Straight Blast Gym Ireland founder and head coach John Kavanagh, 42, was recently in the Philippines with his student Cian “The Warrior” Cowley, 25, for “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors.” It was the first Brave Combat Federation event to be held in the country.
Featuring nine MMA bouts, “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” took place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on March 15, 2019. Fighting out of Dublin, Ireland, Cowley lost to John Brewin, 24, of Auckland, New Zealand in the co-main event of the evening.
Brewin and Cowley competed in the lightweight division. The Irish striker was off to a good start, winning the first round.
However, Brewin’s clinch game stifled Cowley’s standup. After three five-minute rounds, the Kiwi contender training at Bali MMA in Bali, Indonesia won via split decision.
Kavanagh took to Twitter to thank Brave CF and praise his student despite the loss. For the coach, Cowley can fight again as soon as possible since he sustained no injuries from “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors.”
Losing at “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” downgraded Cowley’s professional mixed martial arts record to 2 wins and 2 losses. On the other hand, Brewin now has 5 wins and 1 loss.
“Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” marked Brewin’s fourth bout in Brave CF. On the other hand, it was Cowley’s third outing in the promotion.
In the main event, former Brave CF Featherweight Champion Elias “Smile” Boudegzdame, 25, of France challenged reigning Brave CF Bantamweight Champion Stephen “The Sniper” Loman, 23, of the Philippines. The Filipino defending champion knocked out his French-Algerian opponent via strikes.
Aside from Ireland, New Zealand and the Philippines, the other countries represented at “Brave 22: Storm of Warriors” were Bahrain, Finland, France, India and Pakistan. Brewin and Cowley were the sole representatives of their respective countries.
