The second ONE Championship event to be held in Japan is set on October 13, 2019. The fight card for the event titled “ONE: Greatness Unleashed” has yet to be announced but there is a possibility that Brandon “The Truth” Vera, 41, of the Philippines and Aung La N Sang, 33, of Myanmar are the headliners.
On March 31, 2019, Aung successfully defended his ONE Middleweight World Championship belt at “ONE: A New Era” at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan. He knocked out Ken Hasegawa, 32, of Japan in their rematch.
“ONE: A New Era” featured 11 mixed martial arts bouts and four ONE Super Series matches, which include two kickboxing contests and two Muay Thai contests. The rematch between Aung and Hasegawa was one of the three co-main events of the evening.
Aung is also the reigning ONE Light Heavyweight World Champion. Currently, he is the only ONE Championship champion reigning in two divisions simultaneously.
Reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen, 30, of Vietnam and Australia was the first ever two-division champion of ONE Championship. He used to hold the ONE Lightweight World Championship title but he vacated it on September 28, 2018 due to an injury that prevented him from defending it.
Even before the official announcement of Aung’s victory at “ONE: A New Era,” Nguyen quickly entered the cage to congratulate his Burmese friend. Later on, Vera also entered the cage and expressed his interest in challenging Aung for the ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship title.
Vera and Aung appeared together with ONE Championship chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong during the post-fight press conference for “ONE: A New Era.” Chatri told the media about the possibility of having a superbout between Vera and Aung in the next event in Japan although it was not officially announced.
If Vera beats Aung at “ONE: Greatness Unleashed,” the Filipino-American fighter will become the third ONE Championship athlete to ever hold two division titles simultaneously unless the rematch between reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “The Unstoppable” Angela Lee, 22, of Singapore and reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan, 31, of China happens first.
