Evolve MMA’s Leandro Issa earns 7th ONE Championship win, beats Fu Chang Xin in the Philippines

Training out of Evolve MMA in Singapore, Leandro “Brodinho” Issa, 35, of Brazil was one of the winners at “ONE: Roots of Honor.” It was his seventh victory in ONE Championship.

Featuring two kickboxing contests, two Muay Thai bouts and 11 mixed martial arts matches, “ONE: Roots of Honor” took place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on April 12, 2019. In the 12 bout of the evening, Issa faced Fu Chang Xin, 26, of China in an MMA match at a catchweight of 68 kg with Kemp Cheng as the referee.

Cheng put a stop to the contest after 3 minutes and 3 seconds in the first round when Issa submitted Fu via armbar. This marked the second time the Brazilian contender won via submission in ONE Championship following his arm-triangle choke submission against Roman “Boom” Alvarez, 24, of Guam at “ONE: Spirit of a Warrior” at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar on June 29, 2018.

Winning at “ONE: Roots of Honor” improved Issa’s professional MMA record to 17 wins and 7 losses. On the other hand, Fu now has 9 wins and 2 losses.

At “ONE: Roots of Honor,” Issa was one of the two fighters who represented Brazil. Fu was also one of the two fighters who represented China.

Including Brazil and China, 18 countries were represented at “ONE: Roots of Honor.” The other countries were Afghanistan, Australia, Cuba, Indonesia, Japan, Mongolia, Morocco, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and the United States.

As an MMA fighter, Issa has been competing professionally since 2006. The Evolve MMA fighter competed in ONE Championship from 2011 to 2013 and moved to the Ultimate Fighting Championship from 2014 to 2016.

In 2017, Issa returned to ONE Championship. He lost to two opponents in the promotion namely Soo Chul Kim, 27, of South Korea, who first lost to the Brazilian fighter at “ONE: Champion vs Champion” in Kallang, Singapore on September 3, 2011, and Muin “Tajik” Gafurov, 23, of Tajikistan.

Aside from Fu, Alvarez and Kim, four other fighters lost to Issa in ONE Championship. They were Masakazu “Ashikan Judan” Imanari, 43, of Japan, Yusup “Maestro” Saadulaev, 34, of Russia, Toni “Dynamite” Tauru, 34, of Finland and Dae Hwan “Ottogi” Kim, 32, of South Korea.
