Russian rapper Alexander Yakovlev earns 3rd UFC win at ‘UFC Fight Night 149’ in St. Petersburg

Fighting out of Saint Petersburg, Russia, mixed martial artist and rapper Sultan Tikhaev, who is professionally known as Alexander “Thunder of the North” Yakovlev  24, was one of the winners at “UFC Fight Night 149.” It was his third victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Featuring 11 MMA matches, “UFC Fight Night 149” took place at the Yubileyny Sports Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia on April 20, 2019. In the fourth bout of the evening, Yakovlev fought Alex “Leko” da Silva, 23, of Balneario Camboriu, Santa Catarina, Brazil in the lightweight division.

Marc Goddard served as the referee. He put a stop to the lightweight contest after 3 minutes and 10 seconds when Yakovlev submitted da Silva via guillotine choke.

Winning at “UFC Fight Night 149” improved Yakovlev’s professional MMA record to 25 wins, 9 losses and 1 draw. On the other hand, da Silva now has 20 wins and 2 losses.

At “UFC Fight Night 149,” Yakovlev was one of the 10 hometown heroes who competed while da Silva was one of the two representatives of Brazil. Japan, Kyrgyzstan, North Macedonia, the Netherlands, Peru, Poland, South Korea and the U.S. were also represented.

Born in Veliky Novgorod, Russia on July 18, 1984, Yakovlev has been competing professionally since 2004. His martial arts background includes Sambo and freestyle wrestling.

Yakovlev joined the UFC in 2014. Before facing Coelho at “UFC Fight Night 149,” the St. Petersburg native defeated Gray “The Bully” Maynard, 39, of Sta. Cruz, California, USA and George “The Silencer” Sullivan, 38, of Belmar, New Jersey, USA in the promotion.

On April 4, 2015, Yakovlev defeated Maynard via unanimous decision at “UFC Fight Night 63” at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia, USA. On January 30, 2016, the Russian fighter knocked out Sullivan via punches at “UFC on Fox 18” at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Aside from fighting, Yakovlev is also pursuing a career in music as a rapper. He released “Examen” (Exam) and “Bad Boy with D.Masta” in 2011 and “Money Power” in 2012.
