Russia’s Magomed Mustafaev earns 3rd UFC win at ‘UFC Fight Night 149’ in St. Petersburg

Fighting out of Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia, Magomed Mustafaev, 30, was one of the winners at “UFC Fight Night 149.” It was his third victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Featuring 11 mixed martial arts matches, “UFC Fight Night 149” took place at the Yubileyny Sports Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia on April 20, 2019. In the first bout of the evening, Mustafaev faced Rafael “Ataman” Fiziev, 26, of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan in the lightweight division.

Vjacheslav Kiselev served as the referee. He put a stop to the lightweight bout after 1 minute and 26 seconds in the first round when Mustafaev knocked out Fiziev via spinning back kick and punches.

This made Mustafaev the first athlete to defeat Fiziev in a professional MMA bout. The Kyrgyzstani fighter now has 6 wins and 1 loss.

Winning at “UFC Fight Night 149” improved Mustafaev’s professional MMA record to 14 wins and 2 losses. He now has 3 wins and 1 loss in the UFC.

It was a successful comeback for Mustafaev, who was coming out of a loss to Kevin “The Motown Phenom” Lee, 26, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, United States. On November 19, 2016, the American fighter submitted the Russian athlete via rear-naked choke at “UFC Fight Night 99” at the SSE Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

After losing to Lee, Mustafaev went on hiatus from 2017 to 2018. “UFC Fight Night 149” marked the Russian fighter’s 16th bout as a professional MMA fighter.

Born in Gergebilsky District, Dagestan, Russia on August 2,1988, Mustafaev moved to Sochi to start his MMA training after high school. As an MMA fighter, he has been competing professionally since 2011.

In 2015, Mustafaev joined the UFC. In the same year, he defeated Piotr “Pletwal” Hallmann, 31, of Gdynia, Poland and Joe Proctor, 33, of Pembroke, Massachusetts, USA in the promotion.

At “UFC Fight Night 149,” Mustafaev was one of the 10 hometown heroes who competed while Fiziev was one of the two representatives of Kyrgyzstan. Brazil, Japan, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Peru, Poland, South Korea and the U.S. were also represented.

Mustafaev won the Performance of the Night at “UFC Fight Night 149.” Sergei Pavlovich, 26, of Moscow, Russia received the same award.
