Terence “Bud” Crawford, 31, of Omaha, Nebraska, United States is still the World Boxing Organisation World Welterweight Champion. Recently, he and Amir “King Khan” Khan, 32, of Bolton, England headlined the inaugural pay-per-view event under the Top Rank on ESPN banner.
On April 20, 2019, Khan challenged Crawford at the Madison Square Garden, New York, USA. Referee David Fields put a stop to the contest in the sixth round when the challenger suffered severe pain from an accidental low blow to his testicles by the defending champion.
Fields first gave Khan time to recover. After a conversation between the Bolton native and his trainer Virgil Hunter, the fight was stopped.
“It’s obvious he was in a lot of pain,” CBS Sports quoted Hunter as saying. “Sometimes you can continue and sometimes you can’t continue. It depends on how hard you were hit in the testicles.”
According to Hunter, he asked Khan if he could continue and the boxer said, “No.” The boxer said he is one of those fighters who gives up but the pain from the low blow was too much for him to endure.
“I was hit below the belt and I can feel it in my stomach and I can’t continue,” Khan explained. “I have never been hit below the belt before. I’m a warrior.”
“I could feel it in my stomach,” Khan continued. “My legs kind of seized, I couldn’t move and I couldn’t continue. I’m not one to give up in any fight. I’ll fight to the end and you have to knock me out in any fight.”
Judges Guido Cavalleri and Steve Weisfeld scored the bout 49-45 while judge Eric Marlinski scored it 50-44 all in favor of Crawford. In the end, Fields raised the hand of Crawford, who was declared the winner via technical knockout.
The victory improved Crawford’s professional boxing record to 35 wins and 0 loss. On the other hand, Khan now has 33 wins and 5 losses.
Top Rank promoted the event in association with Matchroom Boxing and Khan Promotions. Meanwhile, here is a ringside look at Crawford’s first-round knockdown of Khan:
