Ernesto Montilla Jr. is still URCC Global Flyweight Champion

Training out of Team Lakay in Baguio City, Philippines, Edilberto “Scooby” Coquia Jr., 19, challenged reigning URCC Global Flyweight Champion Ernesto “Iron” Montilla Jr., 26. The challenger showed an amazing performance but it was not enough to dethrone the reigning champion.

Featuring 10 MMA matches, which included five title bouts, “URCC Global: Raw Fury” took place at The Cove at Okada Manila in Parañaque City, Metro Manila, Philippines on April 27, 2019. In the sixth bout of the evening, Coquia challenged Montilla for the URCC Global Flyweight Championship title.

After five five-minute rounds, the contest was left in the hands of the judges, who scored it 48-47, 48-47 and 50-45 all in favor of the winner. In the end, the referee raised the hand of Montilla, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Winning at “URCC Global: Raw Fury” improved the professional MMA record of Montilla to 9 wins and 4 losses. On the other hand, Coquia now has 0 win and 3 losses.

Including Montilla and Coquia, 17 hometown heroes competed at “URCC Global: Raw Fury.” China, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland and the United States were also represented.

Coquia made his professional MMA debut in 2016 and made his URCC Global debut at “URCC Global: Raw Fury.” It marked the fifth URCC Global bout of Montilla, who has been competing professionally since 2012.

By beating Coquia at “URCC Global: Raw Fury,” Montilla is still undefeated in URCC Global. The first four opponents he defeated in the promotion were Ricky Lucena, Sem Bicaldo, Nilo Vidal and Jiar Castillo.

On September 28, 2012, Montilla knocked out Lucena at “URCC: Dutdutan Tattoo Festival 2012” at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, Metro Manila. On January 28, 2017, Montilla submitted Bicaldo at “URCC Fight Night: Battle Extreme Tournament of Superstars” at the Casino Filipino-Pavilion in Manila, Metro Manila.

On August 12, 2017, Montilla submitted Vidal via rear-naked choke at “URCC 30” at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila. On September 29, 2018, Montilla also submitted Castillo via rear-naked choke at “URCC: Colossal” at the Araneta Coliseum.
