Basilan is one of the five provinces in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) in the Philippines. The others are Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur and Tawi-Tawi.

Basilan has two component cities namely Isabela and Lamitan and 11 municipalities namely Akbar, Al-Barka, Hadji Mohammad Ajul ,Hadji Muhtamad, Lantawan, Maluso, Sumisip, Tabuan-Lasa, Tipo-Tipo, Tuburan and Ungkaya Pukan. These cities and municipalities collectively have 255 barangays, 45 of which are in Lamitan, the capital of the province.

Born in Sumisip, Hadjiman Sabbihi “Jim” Hataman Saliman served as the congressman of Basilan from June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2016. He has been the governor of the province since June 30, 2016.

Isabela is the only part of Basilan that is not in the BARMM. The city is part of the Zamboanga Peninsula region.

On June 11, 2016, Aicha Francisco represented Isabela at Miss Philippines Earth 2016 and competed against 45 other candidates at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was unplaced.

Miss Basilan 1983 Jennifer Violet Alano was a Mutya ng Pilipinas 1986 finalist. She was the first runner-up when she represented the Philippines at Miss Asia Trade and Culture 1989 in London, England, United Kingdom.
