Samar is one of the six provinces in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. The others are Biliran, Leyte, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar and Southern Leyte.

Catbalogan and Calbayog are the two component cities of Samar. The province has 24 municipalities namely Almagro, Basey, Calbiga, Daram, Gandara, Hinabangan, Jiabong, Marabut, Matuguinao, Motiong, Pagsanghan, Paranas, Pinabacdao, San Jorge, San Jose de Buan, San Sebastian, Santa Margarita, Santa Rita, Santo Niño, Tagapul-an, Talalora, Tarangnan, Villareal and Zumarraga.

Cebu, Philippines was founded on August 6, 1569. Leyte and Samar were separated from the province in 1735.

Initially, Leyte had jurisdiction over Samar but in 1799, the two were officially separated. On August 11, 1841, the latter became a province.

On June 19, 1965, Samar was divided into three provinces namely Eastern Samar, Northern Samar and Western Samar. On June 21, 1969, Western Samar was renamed Samar.
