Malaysia’s Agilan Thani earns 9th ONE Championship win, decisions Japan, South Korea’s Yoshihiro Akiyama at ‘ONE: Legendary Quest’ in China

Agilan “Alligator” Thani, 23, of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia was one of the winners at “ONE: Legendary Quest.” It was the Malaysian mixed martial artist’s ninth victory in ONE Championship.

Featuring three Muay Thai matches, two kickboxing contests and nine MMA bouts, “ONE: Legendary Quest” took place at the Baoshan Arena in Shanghai, China on June 15, 2019. In the co-main event of the evening, Thani fought Yoshihiro “Sexyama” Akiyama, 43, of Japan and South Korea in an MMA match in the welterweight division with Olivier Coste as the referee.

After three five-minute rounds, the welterweight contest was left in the hands of the judges. In the end, Coste raised the hand of Thani, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Winning at “ONE: Legendary Quest” improved the professional MMA record of Thani to 9 wins and 3 losses. On the other hand, Akiyama now has 14 wins, 7 losses, 0 draw and 2 No Contests.

Akiyama was one of the three representatives of Japan and one of the three representatives of South Korea at “ONE: Legendary Quest” while Thani solely represented Malaysia. Australia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Indonesia, Morocco, Myanmar, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Scotland, Thailand and the United Kingdom were also represented.

On June 12, 2019, Akiyama and Thani had their official face-off during the press conference at Yunspace in Shanghai. The event was graced by ONE Championship Greater China chairman Hua Fung Teh and reigning ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan, 31, of China.

Born in Kuala Lumpur on August 18, 1995, Thani was undefeated as an amateur fighter and turned professional in 2015 when he joined ONE Championship. “ONE: Legendary Quest” marked his 12th bout in the promotion.

Thani trains out of Monarchy MMA in Kuala Lumpur under Samir Mrabet, 34, of Brussels, Belgium. In addition, the Malaysian fighter regularly visits Team Quest in the United States for his training.

The first eight opponents Thani defeated in ONE Championship were Reant Febriza Rainir, Hisham Hiba, James Kouame, Brad Robinson, Trestle Tan, Jeff Huang, Sherif Mohamed and Amitesh Chaubey. Meanwhile, watch the “ONE: Legendary Quest” recap here:
