Demian Maia, Ben Askren to headline ‘UFC Fight Night 162’ at Singapore Indoor Stadium

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will hold “UFC Fight Night 162,” also known as “UFC on ESPN+ 20,” at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore on October 26, 2019. The mixed martial arts event will be headlined by welterweight contenders Demian Maia, 41, of Brazil and Ben “Funky” Askren, 35, of the United States.

Demian Maia

Born in São Paulo, Brazil on November 6, 1977, Maia was only 4 years old when he started his training in judo. As he grew up, he also trained in kung fu, karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Maia is now a fourth degree black belt in BJJ. He earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Faculdade Cásper Líbero in São Paulo.

Competing professionally since 2001, Maia made his UFC debut in 2007. He is currently riding a two-bout winning streak.

The São Paulo native holds a professional MMA record of 27 wins and 9 losses. He submitted Lyman Good via rear-naked choke on February 2, 2019.

Ben Askren

Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA on July 18, 1984, Askren attended Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wisconsin, USA and was a two-time state champion in wrestling. was an American amateur wrestler for the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, USA and was an assistant wrestling coach at Arizona State University at Tempe, Arizona, USA.

As a professional MMA fighter, Askren was undefeated from February 7, 2009 to July 5, 2019. On July 6, 2019, in his second UFC bout, he had his first loss after being knocked out Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal, 34, of the U.S. in just 5 seconds in the first round.

Askren reigned as the Bellator Welterweight Champion from October 21, 2010 to November 14, 2013. He held the ONE Welterweight World Championship belt from August 29, 2014 to October 24, 2018.

“UFC Fight Night 162”

The UFC has several events taking place in Asia in 2019. “UFC Fight Night 162” marks the American MMA promotion’s third UFC event to take place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Also on the first card is a lightweight bout between Michael Johnson, 33, of the U.S. and Stevie “Braveheart” Ray, 29, of Scotland. There will also be heavyweight matches between Cyril “Bon Gamin” Gane, 28, of France and Dontale “Kong” Mayes, 27, of the U.S. and between Sergei Pavlovich, 27, of Russia and Maurice “The Crochet Boss” Greene, 33, of the U.S.
