Lee Yeon Joo, 20, will represent South Korea in Miss Universe 2019. She is the country’s 64th representative to compete in the international beauty pageant.
Born and raised in Incheon, South Korea, Lee works as a fashion model. She is 5’10”.
On September 5, 2019, Lee was crowned Miss Universe Korea 2019 at the Miss Queen Korea 2019 coronation night, which was held at the Grand Walkerhill Hotel in Seoul, South Korea. She bested 30 other contestants.
It was the second edition of Miss Queen Korea. In the same event, Im Ji Yeon was crowned Miss World Korea 2019 while Kwon Hwi was named Miss Supranational Korea 2019.
Lee was crowned by Miss Universe Korea 2018 Baek Ji Hyun, 26. The latter did not place in the 67th edition of Miss Universe, which took place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on December 17, 2018.
Runner-up to Lee as Miss Universe Korea 2019 was Park Ha Ri. Kim Seung Hyun and Ha Seo Bin were second and third runners-up.
Right after the Miss Queen Korea 2019 coronation night, Lee took to Instagram to express her happiness. Among those who congratulated her was Miss Supranational 2017 Jenny Kim, 24, who was also Miss World Korea 2015 first runner-up and Miss Congeniality in Miss Universe Korea 2016.
If Lee wins Miss Universe 2019, she will be the first titleholder of the international beauty pageant from her country. The best placement of a candidate from South Korea in Miss Universe was by Jang Yeon Jeong, 49, who was runner-up to Miss Universe 1988 “Bui Simon” Porntip Nakhirunkanok, 51, of Thailand.
The last time South Korea placed in Miss Universe was in 2007. Lee Hanee, 36, of Seoul was third runner-up in the 56th edition of the beauty pageant, which took place at the National Auditorium in Mexico City, Mexico on May 28, 2007.
The reigning Miss Universe 2018 is Catriona Gray, 25, of the Philippines. She is the fourth Miss Universe from her country and the 67th woman to hold the title.
