Undefeated Dagestani champ Khabib Nurmagomedov submits Dustin Poirier at ‘UFC 242’ in Abu Dhabi, UAE

Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov, 30, is still the reigning lightweight champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The undefeated Dagestani mixed martial artist successfully defended his title at “UFC 242.”

Featuring 13 mixed martial arts matches, “UFC 242” took place at The Arena in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on September 7, 2019. In the main event of the evening, Nurmagomedov was challenged by then reigning interim UFC Lightweight Champion Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier, 30, of Coconut Creek, Florida, United States.

Marc Goddard served as the referee. He put a stop to the title unification bout after 2 minutes and 6 seconds in the third round when Nurmagomedov submitted Poirier via rear-naked choke.

In Nurmagomedov’s corner was his father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. In the reigning UFC Lightweight Champion’s post-fight interview, he said, “Everything I am is because of my father.”

“I want to say thank you so much to all of my family, my team, my brothers, my uncles,” Khabib continued. “We have grown up together. We have all done this together.”

“MMA is about respect,” Khabib added. “This is what we showed tonight.”

Winning at “UFC 242” improved the professional MMA record of Nurmagomedov to 28 wins and 0 loss. He now holds the longest undefeated streak in MMA history.

On the other hand, Poirier now has 25 wins, 6 losses, 0 draw and 1 No Contest. It was his fifth loss in the UFC.

Born on September 20, 1988 in Dagestan, Makhachkala, Russia, Nurmagomedov has been competing professionally since 2008. He joined the UFC in 2012.

Before facing Poirier at “UFC 242,” Nurmagomedov defeated 11 opponents in the UFC. They are Kamal Shalorus, Gleison Tibau, Thiago Tavares, Abel Trujillo, Pat Healy, Rafael dos Anjos, Darrell Horcher, Michael Johnson, Edson Barboza, Al Iaquinta and Conor McGregor.

Training out of Eagles MMA in Dagestan and American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California, USA, Nurmagomedov has been reigning as the UFC Lightweight Champion since April 7, 2018. The main event of “UFC 242” marked his first title defense.
