“The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang, 33, of Myanmar is the reigning champion of ONE Championship’s middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. He has been the champion of the light heavyweight division since February 23, 2018.

Aung’s first title defense as the ONE Light Heavyweight World Champion will be at “ONE: Century 世紀.” He will be challenged by reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion Brandon “The Truth” Vera, 41, of the Philippines.

This will be the second ONE Championship event to take place in Japan.  The Singapore-based martial arts organization’s chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong named the event “ONE: Century 世紀” because he wanted to “signify the greatest martial arts event in the last 100 years.”

Open workout

On October 6, 2019, ONE Championship held an open workout at the Bellesalle Shibuya Garden in Tokyo, Japan featuring select “ONE: Century 世紀” athletes including Vera and Aung. It was part of the ONE Martial Arts Fan Fest.

“The last time I was here in Tokyo, it was a memorable evening for me,” Aung shared. “I faced a Japanese warrior named Ken Hasegawa, whom I respect and hold in very high regard. Now, I will face an even greater challenge in veteran Brandon Vera.”

“Without a doubt, Brandon will be my toughest opponent to date but I believe in my coaches,” the Burmese mixed martial artist continued. “I believe in my preparations. We’ve left no stone unturned and we’re ready to take care of business next Sunday night.”

Press conference

“ONE: Century 世紀” press conference took place at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo, Japan on October 10, 2019, which happened to be Vera’s 42nd birthday. It was attended by Chatri and ONE Championship Japan president Andy Hata.

“Thank you, Tokyo, for hosting ONE Championship’s 100th event,” Aung said during the event. “I love how noble and respectful the Japanese people are. It’s an honor for me to compete in front of the Japanese fans. I want to thank Brandon Vera for asking me for this fight.”

“I’ve been a big fan of his since I was in college 10 years ago,” Aung revealed. “I’ve been training for over six months now, and training has gone very well. I hope to put on the best performance of my life this Sunday.”

“I’ve been with the company since ONE Championship 17,” Aung added. “This organization upholds the true martial arts values. It has respect for its athletes. I’m so honored to be a part of this promotion. I promise you guys, ONE Championship is the future of martial arts.”
