Philippines’ Brandon Vera: I’ll be ONE Heavyweight World Champion until I retire

Brandon “The Truth” Vera, 42, of the Philippines has been reigning as the ONE Heavyweight World Champion since December 11, 2015. On October 13, 2019, the Filipino-American mixed martial artist will challenge ONE Middleweight and Light Heavyweight World Champion “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang, 33, of Myanmar at “ONE: Century 世紀.”

This will be the second ONE Championship event to take place in Japan.  The Singapore-based martial arts organization’s chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong named the event “ONE: Century 世紀” because he wanted to “signify the greatest martial arts event in the last 100 years.”

Open workout

On October 6, 2019, ONE Championship held an open workout at the Bellesalle Shibuya Garden in Tokyo, Japan featuring select “ONE: Century 世紀” athletes including Vera and Aung. It was part of the ONE Martial Arts Fan Fest.

“In my entire career, I’ve dreamed of becoming a two-division World Champion and competing in Japan,” Vera stated. “Next week, I have the chance to fulfill both of those dreams. This is such a huge fight for me, the biggest in my career so far.”

“Taking on Mr. Aung La for the ONE Light Heavyweight World Championship is an honor,” Vera continued. “I’ve trained very hard for this fight and I’m ready. It’s going to be an action-packed bout between two come-forward warriors.”

Press conference

“ONE: Century 世紀” press conference at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo, Japan on October 10, 2019, which happened to be Vera’s 42nd birthday. It was attended by Chatri and ONE Championship Japan president Andy Hata.

“I’m very excited to be here in Japan competing and very excited to be on the path to fulfilling a lifelong dream of mine to become a titleholder in two divisions,” Vera said. “I’m the ONE Heavyweight World Champion, which I will be until I retire. Now, I am chasing after the ONE Light Heavyweight World Title against a man who is cut from the same cloth.”

“This bout means more to me than anything else in my career,” Vera continued. “It’s a dream come true to be with ONE Championship all throughout Asia. It’s a dream to compete and perform in front of all of you here in Japan.”

“It’s time for me to fulfill my dreams and my destiny,” Vera added. “Thank you ONE Championship and Mr. Aung La for making this bout possible.”

Fight night

“ONE: Century 世紀” is the 100th live event of ONE Championship. It features 28 world champions from across various martial arts and seven world title bouts in two full-scale events.

The first part will be broadcast live in the United States via TNT and B/R Live. It starts from 9:00 a.m. JST on October 13, 2019 or 8:00 p.m. EST on October 12, 2019.

Vera and Aung’s match is the main event of the second part, which will be broadcast live across more than 140 countries worldwide and streamed to 2.6 billion potential viewers through the world’s largest television networks. It starts from 5:00 p.m. JST on October 13, 2019 or 4:00 a.m. EST on October 12, 2019.
