ONE Championship recently concluded its inaugural ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix at “ONE: Century 世紀” in Tokyo, Japan. The winner was reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Christian “The Warrior” Lee, 20, who is training out of Evolve MMA in Singapore and United MMA in Hawaii, United States.
“ONE: Century 世紀” was the second ONE Championship event held in Japan and the martial arts organization’s 100th live event. The combat sports event had two parts with 11 bouts each.
Featuring mixed martial arts, Muay Thai and kickboxing matches, “ONE: Century 世紀” took place at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo on October 12, 2019. In the eighth bout of the first part, Lee and Saygid “Dagi” Guseyn Arslanaliev, 23, of Turkey competed in the inaugural ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix Championship with Olivier Coste as the referee.
It was a close and competitive first round with Arslanaliev attacking with powerful punch combinations. Lee found success in taking his Russian-Turkish opponent down and scoring with ground-and-pound.
In the second round, Arslanaliev appeared exhausted. Lee capitalized on this and piled on unrelenting punishment from top position.
In the third round, Lee continued his dominance and pounced on Arslanaliev. The latter could do little more than defend from the onslaught.
After three five-minute rounds, the championship bout was left in the hands of the judges. In the end, Coste raised the hand of Lee, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.
Lee now has 13 wins and 3 losses. Arslanaliev has 8 wins and 2 losses.
The Evolve MMA representative now holds two belts. He is the reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion and the inaugural ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix Champion.
Including Singapore and Turkey, a total of 18 countries were represented in the two parts of “ONE: Century 世紀.” The others were Algeria, Belarus, Brazil, China, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States.
Lee was one of the two fighters who represented Singapore while Arslanaliev solely represented Turkey. Watch the highlights of “ONE: Century 世紀” part 1 here:
