Pieter “The Archangel” Buist, 31, of Breda, North Brabant, Netherlands has earned his second victory in ONE Championship. He was one of the winners at “ONE: Dawn of Valor,” which took place at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta, Indonesia on October 25, 2019.
“ONE: Dawn of Valor” featured 13 mixed martial arts bouts and three ONE Super Series contests, which are two kickboxing contests and one Muay Thai fight. In the fifth bout of the evening, Buist competed in an MMA bout in the lightweight division against ONE Championship debutante Antonio “The Spartan” Caruso, 28, of Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
Olivier Coste served as the referee. Buist weathered the early storm from Caruso who came out firing.
Longer and taller, Buist came on early in the second round to turn the tide, using his punishing leg kicks, smooth boxing combinations and sharp knees to wear Caruso down. After three five-minute rounds, the lightweight bout was left in the hands of the judges.
In the end, Coste raised the hand of Buist. The Dutch contender was declared the winner via unanimous decision making him the first ever athlete to defeat Caruso in a professional MMA bout.
Winning at “ONE: Dawn of Valor” improved the professional MMA record of Buist to 16 wins and 4 losses. On the other hand, Caruso now has 7 wins and 1 loss.
Including the Netherlands and Australia, 15 countries were represented at “ONE: Dawn of Valor.” The others were Argentina, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, New Zealand, the Philippines, Sweden, Tajikistan, Timor Leste and the United States.
Buist was one of the three fighters who represented the Netherlands. He is training out of Team Souwer and Combat Brothers.
Caruso solely represented Australia. He trains at Hard Knocks 365.
