Antwerp, Belgium’s Marat Grigorian is still GLORY Lightweight Champion, knocks out Kosovo’s Elvis Gashi at ‘Glory 73: Shenzhen’

Marat Grigorian, 28, of Antwerp, Belgium is still the champion of the lightweight division of GLORY Kickboxing. The Armenian-Belgium kickboxer successfully defended his title at “Glory 73: Shenzhen.”

GLORY held “Glory 73: Shenzhen” at the Nanshan Culture and Sports Center in Shenzhen, China on December 7, 2019. In the main event of the evening, Elvis Gashi, 26, of Kosovo challenged Grigorian for the GLORY Lightweight Championship title.

The referee put a stop to the title bout after 2 minutes and 3 seconds in the fifth round. Grigorian knocked out Gashi via punches.

It was Gashi’s first ever loss as a professional kickboxer. It was also his sixth bout in GLORY.

Losing at “Glory 73: Shenzhen” downgraded Gashi’s professional kickboxing record to 23 wins and 1 loss. On the other hand, Grigorian now has 58 wins, 11 losses, 1 draw and 1 No Contest.

Born on May 29, 1991 in Yerevan, Armenia, Grigorian made his professional kickboxing debut in 2007. He made his GLORY Kickboxing debut at “Glory 2: Brussels” at the Forest National in Brussels, Belgium on October 6, 2012.

“Glory 73: Shenzhen” marked Grigorian’s 16th bout in GLORY. It was the second time he defended his GLORY Lightweight Championship belt.

The first time was on October 12, 2019 at “Glory 69: Düsseldorf“ at the ISS Dome in Düsseldorf, Germany. He defeated his challenge Tyjani Beztati, 21, of Amsterdam, Netherlands via unanimous decision.

Grigorian had to try three times to capture the belt. The Armenian-Belgian kickboxer lost three times to Sitthichai Sitsongpeenong, 28, of Bangkok, Thailand.

Sitthichai defeated Grigorian via unanimous decision in the Glory Lightweight Contender tournament at “Glory 28: Paris” at the AccorHotels Arena in Paris, France on March 12, 2016. On December 10, 2016, the two competed for the Glory Lightweight Championship belt at “Glory 36: Oberhausen” at the König Pilsener Arena in Oberhausen, Germany where the Thai kickboxer defeated his Armenian-Belgian opponent via split decision.

On August 25, 2018, Sitthichai and Grigorian had their rematch at “Glory 57: Shenzhen” at the Shenzhen Bay Sports Center in Shenzhen, China. The challenger failed to dethrone the defending champion, who won via split decision.

Grigorian finally won the GLORY Lightweight Championship belt at “Glory 65: Utrecht” at the Central Studios in Utrecht, Netherlands. He dethroned Sitthichai via unanimous decision.
