Training out of Evolve MMA in Singapore, Sam-A Gaiyanghadao, 36, of Thailand is the first ever champion of the strawweight division of ONE Championship’s striking-only league ONE Super Series in kickboxing. He won the inaugural title at “ONE: Mark of Greatness.”
ONE Championship held “ONE: Mark of Greatness” at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on December 6, 2019. In the main event of the evening, Sam-A competed for the inaugural ONE Strawweight Kickboxing World Championship against “Golden Boy” Wang Junguang, 24, of China.
Atsushi Onari served as the referee of the title bout. Ian Cartwright of Canada, Rob Cox of the United Kingdom and Jonathan Lai of Canada were the judges.
After five three-minute rounds, the title bout was left in the hands of Cartwright, Cox and Lai. In the end, Onari raised the hand of Sam-A, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.
Winning at “ONE: Mark of Greatness” improved the professional kickboxing and Muay Thai record of Sam-A to 368 wins, 47 losses and 9 draws. It is the second ONE Super Series title of the Evolve MMA representative, who is also a former ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion.
Known as one of the very best Muay Thai competitors of all time, Sam-A joined ONE Super Series in 2018. Over the course of a stellar 25-year career spanning more than 400 bouts, he has captured Muay Thai World Titles across several weight classes.
An Enfusion Kickboxing World Champion, Wang made his ONE Super Series debut at “ONE: Dawn of Valor,” which took place at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta, Indonesia on October 25, 2019. He knocked out Federico “The Little Big Man” Roma, 34, of Argentina in a kickboxing bout at a catch weight of 59kg.
“ONE: Mark of Greatness” marked the second ONE Super Series bout of Wang. He now holds a professional kickboxing record of 24 wins, 4 losses and 1 draw.
