The Republic of Senegal is a country in Western Africa. The country is bordered by Mauritania in the north, Mali to the east, Guinea to the southeast and Guinea-Bissau to the southwest.
Senegal became a republic on November 25, 1958 and united with Mali in January 1959 to become the Mali Federation, which gained independence from France on June 20, 1960. In August 1960, Senegal withdrew from the federation.
On September 28, 1960, Senegal was admitted to the United Nations. The country’s incumbent and fourth president Macky Sall, 58, assumed office on April 2, 2012 and was reelected on February 24, 2019.
