Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 35, of the Philippines is one of the first Team Lakay fighters to grace the ONE Championship stage in 2020. The Igorot mixed martial arts superfighter is one of the hometown heroes competing at “ONE: Fire and Fury” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on January 31, 2020.
It is not likely that Folayang will compete 13 times in 2020. But in case that happens, here are the opponents we want the former ONE Lightweight World Champion to share the ONE Championship stage with:
#1 | Ahmed “Wolverine” Mujtaba | Pakistan
First on the list is Mujtaba because he is set to face Folayang at “ONE: Fire and Fury,” the first ONE Championship event to take place in the Philippines in 2020. Training out of Fight House and MYGYM, the Pakistani MMA fighter is a former UGB and WSOF Global Featherweight Champion.
#2 | Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen | Australia and Vietnam
Also from featherweight, Nguyen once shared the ONE Championship stage with Folayang in the lightweight division. Once the Team Lakay fighter reclaims the ONE Lightweight World Championship belt, the Vietnamese-Australian MMA star can be an excellent challenger.
#3 | Ev “E.T.” Ting | New Zealand and Malaysia
Another rematch that fans want to see in ONE Championship is between Folayang and Ting. The Kiwi-Malaysian MMA star failed to dethrone Igorot MMA superstar when the latter was the reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion in 2017.
#4 | Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez | United States
Alvarez submitted Folayang via rear-naked choke in 2019. A rematch between the two can be a good main event for a ONE Championship event in 2020.
#5 | Timofey Nastyukhin | Russia
In 2014, Nastyukhin knocked out Folayang . The two have yet to have a rematch in ONE Championship.
#6 | Lowen Tynanes | United States
In 2012, Folayang lost to Tynanes in the Universal Reality Combat Championship, which was renamed the URCC Global in 2018, but the two has yet to battle it out in the ONE Championship cage. The American fighter is still undefeated and his first ever defeat may come from the Igorot MMA superstar.
#7 | Iuri Lapicus | Italy and Moldova
Like Tynanes, Lapicus is undefeated. Competing both as a featherweight and a lightweight, the Moldovan-Italian MMA fighter should test his skills with a veteran like Folayang.
#8 | Antonio “The Spartan” Caruso | Australia
Training out of Hard Knocks 365, Caruso said goodbye to his undefeated record in his ONE Championship debut in 2019. A great comeback for him is a fight with a former champion like Folayang.
#9 | Pieter “The Archangel” Buist | Netherlands
It was Buist who broke Caruso’s undefeated record. A ONE Championship veteran like Folayang can be a good test for the Dutch MMA fighter.
#10 | Johnny Nuñez | United States
A former Bellator MMA fighter, Nuñez was not successful in his ONE Championship debut in 2019. While he is new in the promotion, he has enough experience from other promotions that make him a good match against Folayang.
#11 | Daichi Abe | Japan
A former UFC fighter, Abe was not successful in his first two ONE Championship bouts. He should step it up a notch and face Folayang.
#12 | Saygid “Dagi” Guseyn Arslanaliev | Turkey and Russia
Arslanaliev almost won the inaugural ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix Championship in 2019 but failed. A fight with a former champion like Folayang can be a good comeback for the Russian-Turkish fighter.
#13 | Christian “The Warrior” Lee | Singapore
While reigning as the ONE Lightweight World Champion, Lee defeated Arslanaliev in the inaugural ONE Lightweight World Grand Prix Championship final. After earning a few wins in 2020, Folayang should be given a chance to reclaim the ONE Lightweight World Championship belt by dethroning Lee.
