2020 JML Luzon Cup

Philippine Rugby alongside headline partner JML Philippines launched the 2020 JML Luzon Cup at Club United in the Merville Park Subdivision in Parañaque City, Metro Manila, Philippines on February 8, 2020. It was a great weekend to open the season.

The Santos Knight Frank Mavericks opened with the first win of the season defeating Eagles RFC, 48 to 10. Also, the Makati Chiefs defeated the Albay Balkans, 28 to 17.

There are 12 teams featured in the 2020 JML Luzon Cup across three divisions for both the men and women. There are three men’s teams in the Philippine Rugby Football Union Premiership Shield 2020 and the competitions will run for a total of 16 weekends from February 2020 to July 2020.

This marks the first time the Philippine Rugby is adopting an all national Philippine 15s division that will be implemented to help foster the development of local talent and provide a pathway to play the countries most experienced players who will be featured in the Premiership Shield. PFRU general manager Jake Letts stated, “Overall, the competition is going to be exciting for 2020, focusing on pathways and competitive matches this year.”

“Last year, we had one division, this year it is catered to development and ensuring matches are played competitively with the spirit of Rugby in mind,” Letts continued. “Rugby has come leaps and bounds since it was first introduced. It’s going to be great to see how far it’s come and witness the players in action not only for the JML Luzon Cup but to see these players progress to the Premiership Shield in years to come.”
