Ex-UFC fighters Jose Torres, Matheus Nicolau to compete at BRAVE CF Flyweight Tournament quarterfinals at ‘BRAVE CF 35’ in Brazil

BRAVE Combat Federation is holding a tournament to crown its first ever champion in the flyweight division. Two of the eight quarterfinalists are Jose “Shorty” Torres, 27, of Chicago, Illinois, United States and Matheus Nicolau, 27, of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

The BRAVE CF Flyweight World Championship tournament quarterfinal bout between Torres and Nicolau will be at “BRAVE CF 35.” It will take place in Balneário Camboriú, Santa Catarina, Brazil on March 28, 2020.

Both Torres and Nicolau previously competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The former won one of out two UFC bouts in the UFC.

On April 19, 2020, Torres made his BRAVE CF debut at “BRAVE CF 23,” which took place at the Martyr Rashid Al-Ziyoud Hall Boxing Arena in Amman, Jordan. He defeated Amir “The Prince” Albazi, 26, of Sweden via unanimous decision.

A two-time International Mixed Martial Arts Federation Amateur World Champion, Torres was supposed to fight for the BRAVE Flyweight World Championship title against Marcel Adur, 28, of Balneario Camboriu on November 15, 2019 at “BRAVE CF 29” at the Khalifa Sports City Arena in Isa Town, Bahrain. However, the Chicago native  ended up withdrawing less than a week prior to the fight due to personal issues.

Torres has been competing professionally since 2013. He holds a professional MMA record of 9 wins and 1 loss.

“BRAVE CF 35” marks the second BRAVE CF bout of Torres. It will also be Nicolau’s second outing in the promotion.

In 2015, Nicolau made his UFC debut and won. He won another bout in the promotion in 2017 but lost one in 2018.

Also in 2015, Nicolau won two out of three bouts in “The Ultimate Fighter Brazil” Season 4. He also competed in “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 23 finale in 2016 and won via split decision against John “Chicano” Moraga, 35, of Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

After two UFC bouts, Nicolau won one bout in Future Fighting Championship. He then made his successful BRAVE CF debut at “BRAVE CF 25” on August 30, 2019 at the Minas Tenis Clube Arena in Belo Horizonte.

Nicolau defeated Felipe Efrain, 26, of Sao Paulo, Brazil via unanimous decision at “BRAVE CF 25” in the bantamweight division. It improved the professional MMA record of the former to 15 wins, 2 losses and 1 draw.
