Gerald “GM3” Meerschaert, 32, of Racine, Wisconsin, United States was one of the winners at “UFC 248.” It was the American mixed martial artist’s fourth win in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Featuring 11 MMA matches, including two title bouts, the UFC held “UFC 248” at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on March 7, 2020. In the third bout of the evening, Meerschaert competed against Deron Winn, 30, of Gilroy, California, USA in the middleweight division.
Keith Peterson served as the referee. He put a stop to the middleweight contest at 2 minutes and 13 seconds in the third round when Meerschaert submitted Winn via rear-naked choke.
Losing to Meerschaert downgraded the professional MMA record of Winn to 6 wins and 2 losses. On the other hand, the Racine native now has 31 wins and 12 losses.
“There was no hate in our eyes but we definitely enjoyed punching each other in the face,” Meerschaert said in his “UFC 248” post-fight interview. The Wisconsin native is now tied for the most submission wins in UFC middleweight history with five along with Brazil’s Demian Maia, 42, Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares, 40, Thales Leites, 38, and Antônio Carlos “Cara de Sapato” Júnior, 29.
Aside from the U.S., 11 other countries were represented at “UFC 248” namely Argentina, Brazil, China, Cuba, Denmark, Georgia, Mexico, Mongolia, New Zealand, Poland and Russia. Meerschaert and Winn were two of the 10 fighters who represented the U.S.
In the main event of the evening, UFC Middleweight Champion Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya, 30, of Auckland, New Zealand successfully defended his belt from Yoel “Soldier of God” Romero, 42, of Pinar del Rio, Cuba and Miami, Florida, USA. The Nigerian-Kiwi champion won via unanimous decision.
In the co-main event, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, 32, of Olsztyn, Poland challenged UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion “Magnum” Zhang Weili, 30, of Hebei, China. The Chinese defending champion won via split decision.
Born in Racine on December 18, 1987, Meerschaert has been competing professionally since 2007. He joined the UFC in 2016.
