Comedy Central to premiere ‘Awkwafina is Nora From Queens’ in Asia

Comedy Central will premiere in Asia the highly anticipated “Awkwafina is Nora From Queens” starring Chinese-Korean-American actress, comedian, writer, producer and rapper Nora “Awkwafina” Lum, 31. The half-hour scripted comedy will air on March 18, 2020 at 9 p.m. in Indonesia and Thailand, at 10 p.m. in Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong and at 11 p.m. on Astro in Malaysia.

Based in Manhattan, New York, United States, Comedy Central shared the slate of predominantly female and diverse directors for the 10-episode series. Among them are Emmy® Award-nominated actress-director Natasha Lyonne (“Russian Doll”), Lucia Aniello (“Broad City”), Jamie Babbit (“But I’m a Cheerleader”), The Daniels (“Swiss Army Man”), Steven Tsuchida (“Younger”) and Anu Valia (“The Other Two”).

Starring one of the hottest names in Hollywood, “Awkwafina is Nora From Queens” is loosely based on the real life of Awkwafina growing up in Flushing, Queens, New York. Raised by her Dad (BD Wong) and Grandma (Lori Tan Chinn) alongside her cousin (Bowen Yang), Nora leans on her family as she navigates life and young adulthood in outer borough, New York City.

In real life, Awkwafina was born in Stony Brook, New York on June 2, 1988 to her Chinese American father Wally Lum and her late Korean American mother Tia Lum, who died from pulmonary hypertension in 1992. Wally and his parents raised Awkwafina in Forest Hills, Queens.

After graduating from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan, Awkwafina attended the State University of New York at Albany in Albany, New York and Beijing Language and Culture University in Beijing, China. For her lead role in “The Farewell” in 2019, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture- Comedy or Musical, making her the first woman of Asian descent to win a Golden Globe in any lead actress film category.

The all-star roster of guest stars of “Awkwafina is Nora From Queens” include Asian and non-Asian celebrities. Among them are Celia Au, Matthew Broussard, Michelle Buteau, Jamie Chung, Laverne Cox, Deborah S. Craig, Makeda Declet, Jennifer Esposito, Chrissie Fit, Chris Gethard, Bella Heathcote, Carmen M. Herlihy, Stephanie Hsu, David Krumholtz, Simu Liu, Natasha Lyonne, John “Dumbfoundead” Park, Matt Rogers, Harry Shum Jr., Melissa Villaseñor, Ming-Na Wen and Jaboukie Young-White.

Awkwafina executive produces “Awkwafina is Nora From Queens” with Karey Dornetto, Lucia Aniello, Teresa Hsiao, Peter Principato and Itay Reiss of Artists First while Sarah Babineau and Rachel Olson are the executives in charge of production for Comedy Central. Watch the trailer here:
