Accused George Floyd murderer Derek Michael Chauvin, 44, of Oakdale, Minnesota, United States was arrested on May 29, 2020. The former Minneapolis Police Department officer is currently detained at Ramsey County Jail in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

There is a camera in Chauvin’s cell and he is being regularly checked. To make sure nothing happens to him while he is in custody, guards are monitoring the feed 24/7 and they are checking on him in person every 15 minutes, a source told TMZ.

The source told the publication that Chauvin did not make eye contact with anyone upon his arrival at Ramsey County Jail. After putting on a jail uniform following an unclothed body search, he was sent to a single cell in a special wing of the facility for high-profile cases, the source said.

While in isolation, Chauvin has access to books, paper and pencils and a pillow is sewn to his bed, which is bolted to the floor, according to the source. Required to be in the cell for 23 hours a day, he is given an hour a day for a recreation time in an enclosed area, the source added.

Because of the risk of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), most Ramsey County Jail inmates are being held in cells without another person. To ensure the safety of everybody in the facility, the jail has a system of classifying inmates, the Twin Cities Pioneer Press quoted Ramsey County sheriff Bob Fletcher as saying.

On May 25, 2020, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. The latter died that day while the former was fired by the Minneapolis Police Department the next day along with his colleagues Thomas K. Lane, 37, Tou Thao, 34, and J. Alexander Kueng, 26, who participated in the fatal arrest.

Lane, Thao and Kueng have yet to be charged while Chauvin is facing third-degree murder and manslaughter charges. A bail set for $500,000.

Chauvin has been married to Kellie May Xiong Chauvin, 46, since 2010 but she has filed for divorce. Her divorce lawyer Amanda Mason-Sekula also clarified in an email obtained by the Houston Chronicle that she is not Thao’s sister as claimed by some reports.

Kellie, who is of Hmong descent, has a brother who works as a police officer in St. Paul. It has yet to be confirmed if he is assigned at Ramsey County Jail.
